I’ve recently started reading Shiawase Kissa Sanchoume (Happy Cafe) during my lunch breaks at work. It is very relaxing and cheers me up some from my stressful day so I’m grateful for it! I will probably gain a couple pounds as the yummy looking treats really induce some massive sweet tooth cravings. I think it will be worth it though.
The story centers around 16 year old Uru who started working at Bonheur to earn money so she can live in her own apartment. Uru is short and cute and often mistaken for being much younger than she really is. She is very clumsy, but most of the time it is due to her weird super strength that she is constantly breaking things. Uru acts a bit like an airhead when it comes to the feelings of others directed toward her, but recognizes love interests of others and plays matchmaker with other couples. The manga is slowing becoming a reverse harem with both the shop workers, Shindou and Ichirou, as well as rival shop workers the Abekawa brothers, develop feelings for Uru.
Shindou, 20 years old, is the shoppe’s creator of the beautiful treats. Abandoned by his mother as a young child, he has major abandonment issues once he allows someone inside his heavily fortified heart. Affectionately nicknamed Demon King, he comes across a bit harsh when he’s worried about the cafe or his friends. He is adopted by the cafe’s manager and learned the tricks of the trade from him. As it happens, he also turns out to be Uru’s neighbor, which brings opportunities for them to meet outside of work.
Ichirou randomly falls asleep when he gets hungry and can only be woken when food is shoved in his mouth. This habit developed when he was a child as a result of trying to stay awake to have dinner with his parents when they came home late at night. He was a very lonely child so now values Uru’s reliability in coming in everyday to work with him at the cafe. He is very protective of her and makes comments of keeping her to himself. You can never tell if he is joking or not as his facial expression rarely changes.
The Abekawa brothers first come into the story as a couple of troublemakers trying to take business from Bonheur. Turns out that the older brother, Kashiwa, was basically just jealous that his baby sister enjoys Bonheur’s treats as much as the ones he crafts himself. Eventually, the two cafes form a truce. Kashiwa is very flirty but it is the younger brother, Sou, that beats them all the punch confessing his feelings to Uru. Unfortunately she is asleep at the time.
I’m only about half way through reading this manga but this will be one I definitely finish. It is extremely enjoyable with realistic characters and entertaining plot, if not slow at times. I borrowed these manga pics from mangareader.net , check it out if you have the time.
Alright readers, any suggestions for me when I finish reading this one? Something light and fun to read on my lunch breaks would be wonderful! Thanks for reading!
